I am disappointed the VTHC is supporting the ALP. Cath Bowtell can be partly blamed for the appalling IR system we still have and I would bet that, if elected, she will simply toe the party line and betray the very people who entrusted her with their votes. Why the hell vote for her when she is not prepared to rail against the right wing party brokers? I very much doubt she would cross the floor on IR. The best outcome for the election is that Adam Bandt holds the balance of power in the House of Reps and forces the Labor Party to at last do the right thing - that is, restore the rights of workers and unions and abolish the ABCC. It would also send a very powerful message to the right wing idiots of the party that we will simply not stand for their nonsense and the way in which business is dictating to them.

Thanks Terry, We rely on all of the union community for information leads (you can't look everywhere every day) and welcome all contributions relevant to trade union activity. The Union Show webpage is a wordpress blog. Anyone who would like to post articles on the website is welcome to do so and need only send me their email address so that I can list them as a contributor. All points of view can be expressed - without dissent there is no reason. Gratuitous vitriol against unions will not be published - this is a union site. I have posted the article from your link Terry. The ITUC is the peak body for Trade Unions globally. As workers I think we have some kind of responsibility to express our opinion on statement or actions made by the ITUC. For sure, election of an executive does not give them a mandate to act on our behalf without consultation. Email info@ituc-csi.org.

Unfortuately, it also rejected the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign by pro-Palestine unions and elected an official of the pro-apartheid Israeli Histadrut to its executive, much to the glee of the Israel front group in the unions, TULIP (see http://www.tuliponline.org/?p=1930). It did this by blocking a COSATU resolution calling for support for BDS against apartheid Israel. Surely the Union Show should report that too?

What a day - ACTU Women's Committee - certainly a mood of celebration.

It certainly puts me in a reflective mood. It's hard not to be - I got involved in a union policy debate in 1983 - wow - it is easily remembered because it was heated and full of indignation and horror - and those days were relatively modern. I have a feeling that the struggle has been going on so much longer than 30 years as it felt like it was in full flight then.

I wonder how this will be remembered? I just hope it will be treasured in a way that protects it from being reversed by some reactionary group who wants to remove it. Not seen merely as a social welfare payment but a means of reducing the wealth and income disparity between women and men.

And, although today is precious, there is still so much to continue to fight for - 18 weeks isn't enough, non inclusion of superannuation to be righted, and when the conditions are good enough, it will hopefully be an encouragement to males to take the leave and allow a fairer share of parenting between both genders. Then I will be happy that all of the employers in male dominated industries will be paying their share of the costs too.

Best of all, the reaction from the taxi driver in Melbourne who asked me what I did for work and when I said I worked for a union, he started speaking happily about the new law being created. I thought that was probably the coolest reaction I have had for a while.
